The Heart of What We Do: Inside Halcyon Home’s End-of-Life Doula Program

At Halcyon Home, Our Purpose is People.

And nowhere is that more evident than in the way we care for individuals and families during life’s most sacred and vulnerable moments.

This spring, we proudly certified a new class of 15 End-of-Life Doulas through our internal Death Doula Certification Program—an initiative led and taught by our CEO, Amy Sweet. Among them were team members like Lindsay and Molly, who completed their certification in March and are already bringing this work to life in meaningful and unforgettable ways.

Offered twice a year, this program is more than education—it is a transformation in how we show up for patients, families, and one another.

What Is an End-of-Life Doula?

An End-of-Life Doula provides non-medical, holistic support to individuals and families navigating the end-of-life journey.

While our hospice clinicians care for physical needs, doulas focus on the human experience—emotional presence, spiritual support, meaning-making, and legacy-building.

They sit bedside.

They listen.

They create space for what matters most.

Moments That Matter Most

If you have followed along on our Facebook page recently, you have seen glimpses of this work in action through photos and videos that capture just how meaningful these moments can be.

One of those moments was Mehdi’s 97th birthday/bluebonnet surprise.

Surrounded by bluebonnets at Muleshoe Bend, he fulfilled a deeply personal wish: to spread his late wife Kaye’s ashes among the flowers she loved most. The images from that day tell a beautiful story—but what they do not fully capture is the intention behind it. The planning, the listening, and the understanding of what that moment truly meant to him.

It was not just a birthday.

It was love, memory, and legacy coming full circle.

In another recent post, a video shows a patient riding in a classic Thunderbird—smiling, present, and fully alive in the moment. For many, it is a joyful clip. For us, it represents something deeper: reconnecting someone with a part of themselves that still matters.

These are the moments we are honored to share publicly. They offer a window into what compassionate care can really look like.

The Moments You Don’t See

But just as important as the moments captured on camera are the ones that are not.

The quiet ones.

The ones that happen in living rooms, at bedside, and in the stillness between conversations.

Sometimes, it is sitting with someone who does not want to be alone.

Sometimes, it is helping a family find the right words—or honoring silence when there are none.

Sometimes, it is listening to stories that have never been spoken aloud.

Sometimes, it is offering reassurance in the middle of uncertainty.

These moments do not make it to social media.

But they are often the ones that matter most.

This is where the End-of-Life Doula role becomes transformational—not just for patients, but for the families walking alongside them.

A Program Rooted in Compassion and Excellence

Halcyon Home’s Death Doula Certification Program equips team members across all service lines with the skills to support patients on a deeper, more human level.

Participants are recognized for their commitment to providing compassionate support to individuals and families during the end-of-life journey, reflecting the heart of this program and the intentionality behind it .

With Amy Sweet personally leading the program twice each year, the training remains deeply connected to Halcyon’s mission—ensuring that this work is not just taught, but truly lived.

Why It Matters

In an industry often focused on clinical outcomes and checklists, this program represents something different.

It represents slowing down.

Being present.

Honoring each individual story.

It reminds us that care is not just what we do.

It is how we make people feel.

Looking Ahead

With each new class of certified doulas, Halcyon continues to redefine what compassionate care can look like—for patients, families, and the community we serve.

Because at the end of the day, the most meaningful thing we can offer is not just care.

It is presence.
